smalldemons.uservoice.com vs. smalldemons.com
Oddly enough, I can log into smalldemons.uservoice.com but not smalldemons.com itself. I'm rather puzzled that they are not linked.

Two known data points.
If a proper noun, say Pink, appears in a text published in 1974, then it's safe to assume that it does not refer to the musician, Pink, born in 1979. These are two known pieces of data that mean these two works are not connected.

This is fabulous
I am a huge fan of what you are trying to do. I've been thinking about this kind of meta data for a long time.
Would love to chat with you.

Time Periods
It would be nice to be able to find books set during a certain era. I have a book club reading books set during the medieval period, and it would have been handy to use your website to come up with ideas. As it is, I can't find a way to make it work, so either you've hidden that functionality well, or it doesn't exist.
2 votesThanks, Amy. We’re currently working on this, so very glad to hear it’s something you’d like to do!

adding more books
I notice you don't actually have very many books on the website. I wonder if you could use something like an api from www.librarything,com to add more books, and even get more data.

Labels on the Map
At the moment, the map marks the places mentioned in the book, but they don't seem to tell what specific location is mentioned. For example, there may be a flag in the New York area, but how are we to know if it means the specific street that the flag is on, or the entire area, or a specific borough.
It would be helpful if the marker showed: 1) the specific location and 2) citation or example of where the place was mentioned within the book.
3 votesThank you for the suggestion, Valerie. We’re planning to make a number of improvements to the maps and will make sure these are included.

Link to Freebase, Wikipedia, etc
Although the Freebase license allows a little wiggle room for consumers who are using the data in aggregate, since you have individual concept pages, you really need to link back to the original Freebase page. I generic link to the freebase.com homepage just doesn't cut it.
Similarly, for Wikipedia and others who have attribution licenses.

Music
How about having music as an option. For example, in the band Live's song Freaks they mention in the lyrics having Henry Miller in your back pocket. It would be nice to link books to music and vice versa.
3 votesThanks, Larry. That’s definitely an intriguing idea and something we’ve talked about doing at some point, along with movies and television shows. All forms of storytelling interlinked.

Explanation of purpose
smalldemons is all about text and what's in it. Why is it necessary to use a video to explain what smalldemons is about? I am text oriented; I want an article, not a video.

List book characters under the book/s where they appear
Looking up Catcher in the Rye, I found Holden Caulfield listed on the search results, but a link to this character is no where to be found within the book info.
It would be too vast to have all names mentioned in books listed, but for key characters who have their own entry, it would be practical to link them to where they're mentioned. :-)
1 voteThanks, Helena. Absolutely, and this is in the works.

Connect to Amazon/Kindle
Anyway to connect to my Amazon/Kindle account so I can pull in my already purchased/read books?
6 votesThank you, Rich. This is something we’re definitely looking into.

How others have used an item in a storyboard
I like that it tells us that x number of people have added the same item to a collection, but it would be nice to have more information. Maybe we could see the collection, or maybe there could be a recommendation function where it says "People who added this book also added ..."
2 votesThank you, Russ. That’s a great idea. In an upcoming feature release, along with displaying recently added and featured collections across the site, we will be adding sets of collections to the pages of anything that is included in a collection (i.e. if Madonna is included in 10 collections we’ll show those collections on her page). So when you see the “x number of people added this” text when hovering over a thumbnail image, you’ll be able to click through to the topic’s page to see them.
We totally agree though that it would be even better to find out some of that information before clicking off to the separate page, so we’re looking into that as well. Thanks!

Harvest from my Emily Dickinson project
A friend of mine sent me a link to your project. I'm not sure if you'd be interested, but I've put a couple years into an annotative project connecting Emily Dickinson's poems to their Bible references. Check it out at sapphirefellows.zzl.org and let me know if you have any interest in connecting!
1 voteThank you for sharing, Tyler! We’ll check it out.

Search limiting
It should be possible to limit a search by literature type. I tried to find "Amsterdam in fiction" and had 60 hits, mostly non-fiction. When I tried "Amsterdam" in novels" most of the hits were about novels.
3 votesThank you, that’s a great idea and really helpful for us determining what advanced search options to incorporate.

ISBN
Ability to search by ISBN.
5 votesThank you, Tony. That’s a great idea and something we’ll look into.

Make small demons authoring software
Writing a 630K wd three volume trilogy gets complicated. If Small Demons index and annotation software was available to authors they could write small demon compliant books from the get go. Of course it would have to be able to cope with dialects and non-standard language but the fact that English capitalisation rules are predictable and if a glossary system is provided for authors of sci fi then you could readily capture stories BEFORE they were submitted to publishing.

I am absolutely in love with your site, but as a UX designer, I'm frustrated with the iPad mobile experience. Optimize!! Thank you!
There are a lot of areas that could use benefit from the most basic gestural interactions for a start. Until then I'll thoroughly enjoy the site on my desktop, but I'd rather enjoy it from everywhere! Thanks!
1 voteThank you for the kind words, and our apologies for the iPad experience. We hope to have improvements for it soon.

Literary DNA/family tree feature
I imagine a kind of literary family tree or timeline display of every author's influences, and who they have influenced. Also it would show an author's stylistic relatives and associated contemporaries.
For example: all the major 19th century Russian novelists and poets stemmed from Pushkin...display this, and then show who influenced Pushkin. Detail all the branches of literary milieus, etc. This kind of feature would be amazing...would probably require curators of some kind.
4 votesThank you for the really insightful suggestion! We’re continuing to add new relationships between everything on the site, and this would be a great way to visual them.
